Abuja is well known as the capital of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory. But unknown to some, it’s only one out of the local government areas under the FCT.

How many LGAs are in Abuja?

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria comprises six local government areas (LGAs). These are: Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali. Among them, the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) is specifically responsible for administering the city of Abuja.

Covering a land area of about 7,290 km², the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is divided into six (6) local government areas, namely:

  • Abaji Local Government Area
  • Abuja Municipal Local Government Area
  • Bwari Local Government Area
  • Gwagwalada Local Government Area
  • Kuje Local Government Area
  • Kwali Local Government Area

Each LGA in Abuja has an administrative headquarters and an executive chairman to manage the area council’s affairs.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) oversees the affairs of all local area councils and is headed by an appointed FCT minister.

The current FCT Minister is Ezenwo Nyesom Wike. He was appointed by President Bola Tinubu on August 16, 2023, to steer the ship of the Federal Capital Territory. Prior to this current position, Nyesom Wike was the immediate past Governor of Rivers State.

1: Abaji Local Government Area

Abaji is a local government area in the Federal Capital Territory.

The area covers 992 km² and has a population of 58,642 (2006 census). The land of Abaji is home to indigenes of the Hausa, Bassa, Ganagana, and Egbira ethnic groups.

Abaji Leadership

Political Party: All Progressives Congress (APC)

Status: Newly elected (2026).

Located in the southernmost part of the FCT, Abaji is administered by Umar Abdullahi Abubakar, who secured the seat to help solidify the APC’s majority in the territory.

His administration is noted for its focus on local welfare, including cash empowerment programs for widows and educational bursary schemes for Abaji youth.

The executive chairman of Abaji Area Council is Hon. Umar Abdullahi Abubakar. He emerged victorious in the FCT Area Council chairmanship elections on Saturday, 21 February 2026. By cultural tradition, Abaji is led by the Ona of Abaji, His Royal Majesty Alhaji (Dr.) Adamu Baba Yunusa. He is a first-class traditional ruler and also the chairman of the FCT Council of Rulers. In 2022, he celebrated 25 years on the throne.

There are ten (10) wards in the Abaji Local Government Area Council, and they include:

2: Abuja Municipal Local Government Area

Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) is a local government area in the Federal Capital Territory that also serves as Nigeria’s political and administrative capital.

Geographically located in the centre of the country, AMAC is the administrative headquarters of the FCT and has an estimated population of 776,298 inhabitants (2006 census).

The area is home to the indigenous Gbagyi (Gwari) ethnic group, but you’ll also find clusters of other tribes, including Nupe, Gade, Dibo, Bassa, and Koro.

Abuja Municipal is a well-urbanised area and has been divided into five phases for development efforts under the 1979 Abuja Master Plan.

Each of these five phases contains various districts and neighbourhoods. Examples of districts and towns in Abuja Municipal Area Council include Asokoro, Maitama, Garki, Jabi, Wuse, Wuye, Utako, Gwarinpa, Lokogoma, Jahi, and more.

Asokoro is located within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It specifically falls under the Garki Ward (Ward 02) of AMAC, which also includes Kpaduma I, II & III, Guzape, and Kobin Madaki.

AMAC is the most central and economically significant council in the FCT, housing the Nigerian presidency and federal ministries.

Maikalangu is a two-term Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a major grassroots leader who successfully secured his re-election in 2026.

This position should not be confused with that of the FCT Minister, who is appointed by the President of Nigeria and oversees the entire Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and all area councils in Abuja, FCT.

Abuja Municipal hosts a plethora of notable national monuments and landmarks.

Some of them include the Presidential Complex, National Assembly Complex, National Mosque, Central Park, Millennium Park, Jabi Lake, Eagles Square, the Nigerian National Christian Centre, and many more.

3: Bwari Local Government Area

Bwari is one of the six local government area councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Created in 1991, the area council’s name was coined from Bwaya, and it has an estimated population of about 229,274 inhabitants (2006 population census).

The Bwari Local Government Area is the predominant ancestral home of the Gbagyi ethnic group in Nigeria.

Bwari, known for hosting key institutions like the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the Nigerian Law School, saw a significant political shift in the 2026 polls.

Musa secured a decisive victory with 18,466 votes after the main opposition PDP candidate stepped down to support his campaign just 72 hours before the election.

Bwari has a traditional ruler called the Esu (or Sabwaya) of Bwari. The current Esu of Bwari is His Royal Highness (Dr.) Ibrahim Yaro is the 17th ruler to ascend the respected throne. As a traditional ruler, he preserves the cultural traditions and beliefs of the Gbagyi natives residing in the area.

There’s a second traditional ruler in the Bwari area council known as the Sarkin Bwari. Alhaji Awwal Ijakoro II is the current Sarkin Bwari, a traditional ruler who succeeded his father and ascended the throne in October 2017.

Bwari Wards

There are ten (10) wards in Bwari, and they include:

The area council was created on 15 October 1984, covers a land area of 1043 km², and has a population of about 158,618 inhabitants (2006 census).

Gwagwalada, a major educational and industrial hub in the FCT, is the sole area council successfully retained by the opposition during the 2026 election cycle.

A veteran of local politics who previously ran for Vice-Chairmanship in 2013, Kasim delivered Gwagwalada for the PDP, polling 22,165 votes against the APC.

There are several traditional rulers in Gwagwalada, including the Aguma of Gwagwalada, His Royal Highness Alhaji Muhammad Magaji. We also have the Agora of Zuba, who is His Royal Highness Alhaji Mohammed Bello Umar.

Kuje is a local government area council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria. The council covers a land area of 1,644 km² and has a population of 97,233 (2006 census).

Kuje is a developing area located to the west of Abuja’s central area. The area council is commonly referred to as the “food basket of Abuja,” mainly due to its vast farmland and greenery.

Kuje, often referred to as the “food basket” of the FCT, elected Hon. Shekwolo alongside his Vice-Chairmanship candidate, Boyi Asabe Zainab, during the February 2026 elections.

The 46-year-old chairman successfully flipped the council to the APC, unseating the previous opposition hold in the area.

Traditionally, Kuje is led by the Gomo of Kuje. The current Gomo of Kuje is His Royal Highness Alhaji Haruna T. Jibrin. Other districts in the area council also have their respective traditional heads. Gwargwada is ruled by HRH Alhaji Hussaini A. Mam, who is the current Agabe of Gwargwada. Rubochi is ruled by HRH. Ibrahim M. Pada, who is the current Sa’Rubochi.

Kuje Wards

There are 10 Wards in the Kuje local government area council, and they include:

  • Gaube

Each ward is headed by a councillor and contains various towns and villages such as Aduga, Agwai, Baban Kurmi, and Damwa.

The largest Area Council in Abuja by land area is the Kuje Area Council, covering about 1,650 square kilometres, which accounts for roughly 22.5% of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). In contrast, the most populous is the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), with an estimated population of over 1.4 million as of the 2006 census.

Landmarks in Kuje

Due to the abundance of farmland and greenery in the area, Kuje has a big bustling market where you can buy a variety of food products, fruits, meat, and more.

There are some notable government institutions here, such as the Abuja International Airport and Nigerian Prisons. You’ll also find a host of federal, state (FCT), and private schools such as the Government Secondary School (GSS), Kuje, and Nigeria-Ghana International College.

Kwali is a local government area in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The area was created on October 1, 1996, and covers 1,206 km², with a population of 86,174 (2006 census).

Being the home of the notable potter, Dr Ladi Kwali, you’ll find a lot of pottery activities among the indigenous people of Kwali. They also practice other professions such as cloth-making, farming, and hunting.

Kwali is known for its rich cultural heritage, particularly its traditional pottery. Hon. Daniel Nuhu took over the council’s leadership in the recent grassroots polls.

The 41-year-old candidate secured the chairmanship seat by polling 17,032 votes, running on a joint ticket with Vice-Chairmanship candidate Abdullahi Ramatu.

          2. Dei-Dei sits on the boundary between AMAC and Bwari so there’s a bit of confusion. Because of this boundary, different parts of Dei-Dei is shared between AMAC and Bwari depending on the street or ward.

    1. Every land in Abuja and FCT is registered under AGIS Abuja geoinformatic system, so it is advisable that you approach the area council head to procure land after which you proceed to AGIS to regularize and certify the land.
